Three Dangerous Myths about Tooth Extraction
Myth #1:
All Wisdom Teeth Should Be Extracted. The decision to extract wisdom teeth is based on a number of clinical factors, all of them related to longterm health of the patient. If a patient has wisdom teeth that have erupted or are erupting normally, in a jawbone that has plenty of space to accommodate them, it would be senseless to extract them. If wisdom teeth are poorly erupted and hurting the teeth in front of them or are causing pain, it's clear that something should be done. But many cases fall in between these obvious choices. If the damage to surrounding teeth seems minimal, both clinically and on radiographs (Xrays), it might very well be in the patient's best interest to delay extraction. If underlying nerves, especially in lower wisdom teeth, are likely to be compromised, even temporarily, this is a quality of life issue that might encourage some delay.
Myth #2:
If It Doesn't Hurt Me, I Don't Need To Have It Extracted. Every day, dentists see many patients that have had unrestorable teeth festering in their mouths, sometimes for years. Yet, these patients have never had a day of pain from their bad teeth and are surprised that they are being encouraged to extract them. Only part of the tooth shows in the mouth, sometimes only Xrays reveal the amount of damage that is occurring from infection products under the gum and inside the bone. Keeping an infected tooth from infecting the rest of the body is a strain on the body's immune system, and can lower resistance to other conditions or infections.
Myth #3:
I Should Have My Infected Teeth Removed To Cure My Other Health Conditions.Infected teeth can be a real problem for the body. They are a strain on the immune system and use the body's resources. But sometimes internet sources will implicate teeth in everything from causing diabetes and MS, to worsening heart disease. It's good to address specific infections in the body, whether an ingrown hair or nail or an infected tooth. But sometimes, it's unrealistic to expect a dramatic change in overall health when bad teeth are extracted.
